Some State quarter dollar designs move collectors more than others. And we're not talking about the esthetic appeal of the designs themselves but what the design depicts.
Sixteen State quarter dollar designs feature some method of transportation – either an animal or man-made device.
Horses have been a popular design item on State quarter dollars. The 1999 Delaware coin started off the program with a horse (and rider, the Delaware patriot Caesar Rodney). It was followed several years later by the 2001 Kentucky coin, which features a thoroughbred racehorse standing behind a fence (with the mansion known as My Old Kentucky Home in the background).
The introduction of the 2006 Nevada coin provided another opportunity for a horse-related design to gallop onto the scene. The Nevada coin shows three wild mustangs racing across the flatlands of the state in front of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
The 2007 Wyoming design, the last of the horse-related designs, depicts a silhouette of a horse and rider.
Early aviation is the theme of two State quarter dollar designs. The 2001 North Carolina coin shows the Wright Flyer, piloted by Orville Wright, while his brother, Wilbur, stands on the shore of Kitty Hawk, N.C., watching the first controlled, heavier-than-air, powered flight in 1903. The 2002 Ohio coin also depicts a Wright Flyer, but it's the 1905 version, which the brothers tested near their hometown of Dayton.
Watercraft – from small to large – can be found in abundance on State quarter dollars. The 1999 New Jersey coin design is based on a painting of Gen. George Washington standing in the bow of a troop-laden rowboat as it crosses the Delaware River.
The design on the 2000 Virginia coin depicts three 17th-century sailing ships representing the vessels that transported colonists to establish America's first permanent English settlement, Jamestown, in 1607.
The design for the 2001 Rhode Island coin features a sailboat in Narragansett Bay with the Newport Bridge in the distance. The 2003 Maine coin features a three-masted schooner off the coast with a rendition of the Pemiquid Point Light on the state's rocky shoreline.
The design on the 2003 Missouri quarter dollar recognizes the journey of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, who led the Corps of Discovery exploration from Missouri to the Pacific Coast.
The 2004 Florida quarter dollar depicts a 17th century Spanish galleon and a 20th century space shuttle. The 2005 Minnesota coin depicts two people fishing from a motorboat on a lake.
The 2002 Indiana coin, which depicts an Indianapolis 500 style race car, is the only State quarter dollar to feature an automobile as a design element.
Two other candidates for the "only" category include the 2006 Nebraska coin as the only design to feature an ox-drawn covered wagon. And the 2007 Utah coin design is the only one to have a railroad theme.
