Response floodgate opens
More folks acquiring rolls of State quarters than most collectors might imagine

This week another coin collector and a dealer provide even more insight into this amazing hobby and why some people save rolls of State quarter dollars.

The topic of saving rolls of quarter dollars was first raised in this column in the June 16 issue of Coin World, with collector comments published in the June 30 and July 7 columns.

Howard Espey of Florida writes that he's been collecting one roll each of State quarter dollars struck at the Philadelphia and Denver Mint facilities. He said he put the quarter dollars in plastic tubes "hoping that down the road they may have some value."

But while he's waiting to make a profit on the coins, he's still actively involved in helping others with their hobby.

Espey said he has "friends that depend on me to get their quarters for their books, grandchildren, great-grandchildren. Whenever I had more than I needed I put them in tubes and when someone needed one I supplied it."

That project now has him "thinking of making up a book for two grandchildren from the extras I have."

In addition Espey recently made the observation that "while playing cards there was a large amount of BU [Brilliant Uncirculated] quarters in the game which leads me to believe people are cashing in their rolls for money."

But he's made the decision to hold onto what he has "for the time being but can't hold on too long as I am 81 years young."

Another observation was made by a coin dealer in Virginia.

Doug Bowers of Douggin Collectibles, Strasburg, Va., writes that he is "regularly offered State quarter rolls at 50 cents over face. I turn them down even at face value unless I need some for stock. Many dealers and collectors are looking at 50 states times 1 P roll and 1 D roll and coming up with $1,000 just setting in a roll box with no one wanting them."

Bowers says at shows he's noticed that "collectors are still buying singles they need to complete their sets but I haven't been asked if I had a roll for sale for some time. Most of my sales are the new ones just coming out or one they have missed in the last couple of years."
