Alabama:
James McFall received a 1999-P Delaware quarter at a bank in Bessemer, Ala., Feb. 3.
Alaska: Jonathan
Everest of Fairbanks, Alaska, received a 1999-D quarter on Feb. 22.
Arizona: Bill Gioia of
Tucson, Ariz., reported Feb. 22 that hed received a 1999-D quarter in change at a
local cafeteria. He said it was "slammed down on the counter" but otherwise
appeared to be in good shape.
Arkansas: Mark
Davis of Batesville, Ark., reported Jan. 17 that he received a Denver Delaware quarter in
change at a local flea market on Jan. 16.
He said he hadnt been looking for the new quarters and thought the coin was
perhaps a foreign coin. Davis said "its usually the end of January when the new
coins begin to arrive here."
California:
George Linck of California reported finding a Delaware
State Quarter on January 12, 1999.
Colorado:
Robert Kern Jr. of Colorado reported Feb.4 that he had found a 1999-D Delaware quarter
dollar in Pagosa Springs, Colo.
Connecticut:
Richard Patenaude received a 1999-P Delaware quarter in change Feb. 6 in Norwich,
Conn.
Delaware:
Change from the purchase of a cup of coffee netted Michael A. Caldarazzo
of Claymont, Del., a Philadelphia Mint marked quarter on Jan. 16.
District
of Columbia: Both Philadelphia and Denver Mint Delaware quarter
dollars have been reported in the nation's capital.
Bela Bond of Bowie, Md., reported Jan. 26 that he found a 1999-P
Delaware quarter dollar in the District of Columbia that was apparently struck through
debris of some kind. His coin lacks details in e pluribus unum and the 9s in the date on
the reverse.
G.E. English reported that the manager of a pastry shop in Washington,
D.C., showed him a 1999-D Delaware quarter that he had received in change Jan. 23.
Florida:
Robert Kelley of Ocoee, Florida
reports finding his first Delaware quarter on January 10, 1999.
His mother-in-law received the Philadelphia Mint marked coin in
change that morning. He said the find is particularly exciting because they usually don't
see new quarters until March or April.
Georgia:
John and Kelli Alarcon received a 1999-P Delaware quarter dollar in change Jan. 23
in Atlanta. The couple was celebrating her birthday and tendered a $20 bill to pay a
breakfast bill. Among the coins received in change was a single Delaware quarter, which
was first noticed by Mrs. Alarcon.
Hawaii: Harvey
Blacker of Kailua, Hawaii, received a 1999-P Delaware quarter in change Feb. 5.
Idaho:
Dan Wilhelm of Post Falls, Idaho, reports he found his 1999-D quarter in his change from a
convenience store purchase on Feb. 12.
Illinois:
Tom DeLorey of Harlan J. Berk, Ltd., in Chicago, reported a customer found a 1999
Washington, Delaware quarter dollar with the D Mint mark on Jan.14, 1999.
Indiana:
Grant McBride of Hobart, Ind., found a 1999-D quarter Jan. 20. He said a police officer
came into the store where he works and used one of the quarters for a purchase. McBride
said the officer said he thought the coin was a foreign coin. McBride said he gave the
coin to his father who teaches 5th grade history and the class was excited
about the new coin.
Iowa: Charles
Winterwood acquired a roll of 1999-D Delaware quarters at a bank in Dubuque, Iowa, on Feb.
1.
Kansas: Doug
Spencer of Chanute, Kan., reports finding a 1999-D quarter at his workplace on Jan. 30
Kentucky: A
stop at the grocery store Jan. 19 brought a Denver Mint marked quarter into the hands of
Warren Wadhamus of La Grange, Ky. He said he was surprised and satisfied with his find.
Louisiana:
Gerald Daquin of Harvey, Louisiana, was surprised to see the Denver Mint marked
Delaware quarter out so early in the year, especially "when youre used to
waiting to see new coins until later in the year."
An added bonus to his enjoyment was what he described as the beautiful reworked
portrait of George Washington on the coins obverse and he especially noted the
crispness of Washingtons hair.
Maine: Carla
Robbins, an assistant manager of a Cumberland Farms in Topsham, Maine. She reports a
customer paid for a purchase Feb. 15 with one of the 1999-P quarters and she "was
quite glad to finally have one of my own."
Maryland: Harry
Dipalma of Delmar, Md., also reported finding the quarters on Jan. 10. He said he and a
friend, Jesse Furry, found the coins in change.
Dipalma said the new coins remind him of a token and he's disappointed with "the
amount of damage to the coins already, they look as though they've been in circulation for
quite awhile."
Massachusetts: Brian Keaveney reports he received a 1999-P Delaware quarter dollar on Jan. 22 in
Massachusetts, the first collector to report a discovery in that state. He reports that
the coins are being used to purchase tokens in the Boston subway system.
Michigan: A
waiter in a restaurant 120 miles north of Detroit, Gerald Morgan, received a Delaware
quarter with D Mint mark in his tip on Jan. 17.
Minnesota:
Jessica and Tom Seifert found their 1999-D quarter Jan. 31 at the Sbarros restaurant
they work in at a shopping mall food court in Edina, Minn. They said theyve had fun
overhearing remarks from customers who receive the coins in change but wonder aloud what
country issued the coins. They bought a roll and had fun looking for varieties later that
day.
Mississippi:
Edmund Janis of Biloxi, Miss., found a 1999-D quarter in his change from a local
grocery store on Jan. 31.
Missouri: Dean
Heaton of Saxton, Missouri, reported he found several 1999-P Delaware quarters in $100
worth of coins that he got from his local bank. He also discovered a number of coins
bearing what appears to be evidence of die cracks.
Montana: A
truckstop at the edge of Billings, Mont., was the source of a 1999-D quarter for Ron
Bjelland on Feb. 10. Bjelland reports the quarter has heavy polish marks with die cracks
in three places.
Nebraska:
Robert Dunker of Schuyler, Neb., found numerous errors in his two rolls of the 1999-P
quarters. Several of the coins in one of the rolls are missing parts of the e
in first state or the E is completely obliterated on the back of the
coin due to a filled die.
Filled-die errors occur when dirt, grease and other debris clogs portions of the
incused design elements on the dies (the pieces of steel used to form designs on coins).
These types of errors are very common and appear on all denominations of coins every year.
Nevada: Gary
Inness of Reno, Nev., reports he got a 1999-D quarter in a poker game Jan. 23. He said he
first thought hed gotten a Canadian coin but then wondered why George
Washingtons portrait would be on a Canadian coin.
New Hampshire:
Steven Stover of Portsmouth, N.H., reports finding a 1999-P at his bank on Jan. 21.
New Jersey:
Linda Miller of Vineland, N.J., found a Delaware quarter with P Mint mark in change
Jan. 16 and two days later turned it in to a local radio station for $100.
Pab Sungenis, a disc jockey and assistant program director at WVLT in Vineland/Atlantic
City, N.J., area, offered the "bounty" for the first person to report their find
to him. Miller had heard about the State quarter program months before and was shocked to
hear the radio station offer $100 for the coin. She willingly gave up her Delaware quarter
and claimed the reward. Sungenis, a collector since childhood, said he had ulterior
motives in offering the reward "I wanted to get people looking at their change
closely. And, of course, for the fun of it!"
New Mexico:
Theres a tie for reports on a 1999-D quarter in New Mexico. John Benson of Truth or
Consequences, N.M., said he got his quarter from a co-worker who knows he collects coins.
Jack W. Reed of Kirtland Air Force Base BX found three quarters in his change. Bob
Guzowski of Albuquerque got his quarter from a cashier at a local WalMart.
New York:
Jessie Sassone found a 1999-P quarter at a bowling alley in the Bronx, N.Y. on Jan. 26.
She found the coin in a roll of older circulated quarters and looked through $900 of
additional quarters, but didnt find any more pieces. Sassone is the first to report
a find in New York.
North Carolina:
Jason Strother, reports finding a P Mint marked Delaware quarter in Raleigh, N.C., on Jan.
16
North Dakota:
Virgil Johnson of Fargo, N.D., reports finding his 1999-D quarter Feb. 8 in his change.
Ohio: James
Billheimer of Greenville, Ohio, reported Jan. 21 he got his first real look at a Delaware
quarter when he received it in change at a grocery store. The P Mint marked coin really
made an impression on him.
Oklahoma: Bud
Pilgrim of Oklahoma received his first Delaware quarter in change at a Tulsa, Ok.,
convenience store on Jan. 20. He reports his D Mint marked coin is scratched more than he
thought a new coin would be but "none the less, I will hang on to it."
Oregon:
Glancing through his change after a visit to the local convenience store, William Lukas of
Portland, Ore., found a 1999-D quarter.
Pennsylvania: Tom Shany of Pennsylvania reported finding a Delaware State
Quarter on January 13, 1999.
Rhode Island:
Frank Laliberte of Lincoln, R.I., received two 1999-P Delaware quarters in change in
Pawtucket on Feb. 6.
South Caroline: Fred
Edinger of Hartsville, S.C., reports finding a Philadelphia Mint marked quarter at a
restaurant on Jan. 18.
South Dakota:
On
Feb. 22, Bob Orton of Rosholt, South Dakota, reported finding a 1999-D quarter in change.
Tennessee:
James Paschal of Smyrna, Tenn., is the first to report finding a 1999-P quarter at
his local bank. Paschal, a 6th, 7th and 8th grade teacher
at Smyrna Middle School, said he plans to pass out quarters to his students.
Texas: John
Arnold of Houston, Texas, found his 1999-D quarter in a roll from his local bank. He said
he had to go through a lot of work to get his bank to give him the coins but as a longtime
customer he was able to persuaded them.
Utah: Dan Hammer of
Monticello, Utah, reports finding a 1999-D quarter at a convenience store on Feb. 15.
Vermont: Normand
Lavallee of Vermont found a 1999-P quarter on Jan. 28
Virginia:
Tim Robinson, found a P Mint marked Delaware quarter in some
change from the Safeway supermarket in Reston, Va., Jan. 16. He said he first thought it
was a foreign coin "except for the fact it had George Washington on the face."
He said he didnt really know what he had so he began doing some research on the
Internet and found Coin Worlds site. Robinson said hes glad he knows
what to look for and says he "cant wait to find more."
Washington:
Reed Keeney got his 1999-D Delaware quarters in change Feb. 27 at a coffee shop in
Renton, Wash.
West Virigina:
William P. Cook of Keyser, West Virginia reports finding a 1999-P quarter at a 7-11 store
on Feb. 1.
Wisconsin:
Helen Harnik of Oconomowoc, Wis., can thank her grandson in California for alerting
her to let Coin World know about her State quarter find. Her husband got a 1999-D Delaware
quarter in change at a bank Jan. 20.
Wyoming: Jim Roehr of
Cheyenne, Wyoming, found a 1999-D on Feb. 15.
